For a beginner student, I focus first on communication and correcting errors that get in the way of being understood by others. For more intermediate learners, I would start to focus on using more difficult vocabulary and grammar, especially adverbs, to make your English sound more natural and interesting. With advanced learners, we can start to get into discussions of nuance and impression, and what words or way of saying something will give the impression you want.
