Hello, my name is David, originally from Toronto, Canada. After graduating from the University of Toronto, I moved to Japan in 2016. I taught at Berlitz for 5 years and have also taught at several private schools since then. Teaching is something I genuinely enjoy — I find real satisfaction in helping students reach their goals and gain confidence using English. I specialize in Business English, everyday conversation, and role-playing, focusing on practical English that students can use with confidence. Each lesson is structured to introduce new language and reinforce it through conversation. If you have textbooks, homework, or your own materials, I'm happy to tailor lessons to your needs. My teaching style adapts to each student's goals, but centers on three things: spotting grammatical patterns, building self-awareness of mistakes, and introducing new language as it becomes relevant. Rather than correcting directly, I elicit corrections through hints — for instance, if a student says "I go to the store yesterday," I might repeat it back as "I ___ to the store yesterday," letting the pause signal that the verb tense needs fixing. This trains students to self-monitor, which accelerates real progress, often noticeably even within short timeframes.
