I tend to cater my lessons depending on the student. However, I do follow a certain pattern for almost any level. I assign writing a diary as homework. The student can write as much as they want on any subject. Then during lesson time, they read it to me and we discuss it to start class. This is part of the initial free conversation. I encourage the student to speak by asking questions and creating scenarios. During the time, I am taking notes on their performance and then provide guidance and help with any trouble spot. For the main part of the lesson, it would be materials that I provide them such as a picture or an article. Or sometimes I prompt them with a personal (but safe topic) story about me and let them share their thoughts and feelings. If the student has their own materials to use such as textbook, study book or other media, I would happily make a lesson plan based on them. The goal for me is to provide a comfortable but challenging experience with English with real time feedback on word choice, grammar, pronunciation, study habits, etc. Depending on the student, I will use appropriate English level so they will understand any explanation I provide. I love to encourage and cheer them on when they do well, and motivate them if they are having trouble.
